Hello All,
We agree wholeheartedly with the concept suggested by Russ Bernard...elders
as immersion teachers/caretakers of daycare-aged children. When our
teachers voiced their hesitance about speaking only Hocak to English-
speaking children, we asked them what would make it easier. They replied
that if the children were younger and not already speaking so much, it
would
be relatively easy to conduct an entire day in Hocak only. I too would
like
to hear from other programs that may be trying this approach. As Russ
stated, the "fringe" benefits of this type of language program would be
enormous...a sorely needed childcare program that roots the children firmly
in their culture when they are most easily influenced.
Looking forward to hearing more on this...
