Had the opportunity last semester to hear several lectures last spring
here
at Hopkins by Prof Christopher Jones from the U Penn (Philadelphia) Dept
Archeology. Knowledgeable; really involved in his work; very personable
and
approachable man. Each spring (April/May ?) U PA hosts a "Mayan Weekend" in
Philly with workshops in many aspects of Maya culture: history, language,
archeology, current affairs, language (both historic and contemporary
(it
seems to cover the culture irrespective of "international boundaries").
Seems to be an excellent program. Don't have further contact info with
me;
but he is very easy to reach directly through the university.
They also sponsor "field trips" ( I think for a week ?) to the Mayan
countries, as well as opportunities for research and work on digs.
Hope this helps.
