OCTOBER 27,1997
SALINA, OK
Dagmar Thorpe, Executive Director of "The Thakiwa Foundation", Stroud, OK
of
the Sac and Fox Tribes, has contracted with Lelanie Fuller Stone, of
Salina, Oklahoma, as an herbal consultant for their "Traditional
Agriculture Project". Dagmar Thorpe is the Granddaughter of the World
Renowned Olympic Gold Medallist "Jim Thorpe" of Oklahoma. Ms. Thorpe has
been active in all types of Native American issues since the 1960's.
Lelanie resides on Lake Hudson in northeastern Oklahoma. She is a
Cherokee-American herbalist, author, columnist, artist, teacher and nurse.
Lelanie Fuller Stone commented, "I feel very honored to have been
contacted by Dagmar Thorpe of the Thakiwa Foundation, and Granddaughter
of the famous Jim Thorpe. As a Child growing up in Okmulgee and Henryetta,
Oklahoma, I remember studying about Jim Thorpe in grade school, he was one
of our Oklahoma Heroes." Lelanie further commented, "This project is very
special for the Sac and Fox families and I would like to see this kind of
Rekindling of the Native American traditions and cultures happening in all
the communities in Oklahoma. We have the largest Native American
population in the United States and the greatest number of different Tribes
in one state, this should be the goal of all Tribal Leaders in Oklahoma."
The Thakiwa Foundation was started to rekindle the language, culture and
teachings of the Sac & Fox families living in the area. The Thakiwa
Foundation began the Thakiwa Traditional Agriculture Project in 1995.
This project is targeted at helping the Sac and Fox families of the area to
improve the management, productivity and natural resources of their lands.
The Thakiwa Traditional Agriculture Project has re-introduced the
traditional Sac and Fox crops of corn, beans, and squash (also known as
'The Three Sisters') and has created an
indigenous garden and seed bank.
Dagmar Thorpe and The Thakiwa Foundation has enlisted the help of Lelanie
Fuller Stone for the purposes of identifying the natural herbs and plants
of the area. Lelanie will also assist the Thakiwa Foundation by
explaining the traditional uses of the plants, how to harvest, dry, and
process the natural herbs and foods for storage.
